I recently re-watched Simon Sinek’s TED talk on YouTube “Start with Why” and thought about the current state of our Unity movement and Unity Worldwide Ministries. I began to think about the way in which we address the challenges we currently face in the context of the questions why, how and what.
Some might think the current why, how and what of Unity Worldwide Ministries might be:
“Why” we exist:
Unity Worldwide Ministries exists to support Unity ministers and ministries in creating and sustaining thriving spiritual communities that serve individuals and families drawn to Unity teachings.
“How” we do that:
By serving newly-ordained and experienced ministers, licensed teachers, staff members, and lay leaders in new ministries or established ministries, from boards to banking, from taxes to talks, from children to chaplains, and from visitors to vision, we provide resources to meet your needs.
“What” we provide:
Ordination and credentialing of leaders. Consulting support services, employment services, leadership development resource guides, ministry skills/transitional ministry support, tax exempt status for member ministries, youth and family ministry support, alternative ministry support, e-news, Unity Leaders Journal, regional support and more.
With the above perception, I think we may be falling into the trap of focusing on the “what” and “how” that Sinek addresses in his TED talk. What I would like to suggest (and continue to promote) is a cultural change that addresses and strongly emphasizes a new “why.”
“Why” we exist:
In Unity we believe that a glorious, new and unprecedented future of prosperity, health, peace and well-being can be created for all through the shared spiritual awakening of humanity!
We believe that, through the movement of shared spiritual awakening, we can free ourselves (humanity) from a past of repeated, self-created extraordinary hell-on-earth experiences. These are historic and current experiences created by the pursuit of unenlightened human self-interest. They bring about unbelievable suffering for millions upon millions of people as well as many other life forms on our planet.
Thus, Unity Worldwide Ministries exists as an organization of Unity ministers and ministries committed to advancing the movement that calls us (humanity) to spiritually awaken to our oneness with God, with each other and with all creation. We believe that nothing is more promising or more critical to the well-being and the future of humanity.
Thus our new mission statement adopted in 2014: “Advancing the movement of spiritual awakening and transformation through Unity, a positive path for spiritual living.” Participating in the advancement of this shared spiritual awakening movement can be one of the most deeply rewarding experiences any individual can have.
