Every now and then I run into a colleague who says something like, “I have the most amazing board this year! I think I’m in heaven!” Why not create a reality in which we can all say that most of the time?
A great board of trustees must be clear on the vision of the spiritual community and the mission steps needed to make it come alive. They will be aligned with the core values of the community and prepared to make bold choices. They will model the kind of leadership that encourages others to do the same. Yes, business management skills are necessary, and will be most effective in an atmosphere of mutual spiritual growth and support. Rather than being at odds with each other, they will experience creative tension in ways that foster amazing insights and rich relationships.
Getting there and staying there requires creating a church-wide culture that supports greatness. There are specific steps and ongoing trainings which engage the whole community. Here the focus is board training. I choose to open it to everyone with the following phrases:
Board training is not for everyone. It is for:
- Anyone who serves on a board.
- Anyone who is considering board service in the future.
- Anyone who wants to know what “those” people are up to.
There are three levels of board training offered through Unity Worldwide Ministries, available through the services of your Regional Representative, Peace Skills team member or Transition Consultant. They contain the wisdom found in board and leadership trainings from many disciplines, and go beyond that. These trainings are specific to Unity and the principles we teach. Those of us trained to offer them connect with each other regularly and update the materials as we learn more. The three levels of board training are:
- Board training 1—an extensive overview of the roles and responsibilities of boards, ministers and congregants, with an emphasis on leadership as a spiritual practice.
- Board training 2—offers more depth on spiritual leadership and understanding systems that drive the church.
- Board training 3—focuses on accountability and culture in ministry, and creating a conscious culture.
There are lots of different board trainings around, and some of them are quite good, but only those offered by Unity Worldwide Ministries will address the priorities that are specific to our movement.
